Kutipan sastrawan Walt Whitman tadi menutup plot Dead Poets Society yang sangat memorable. Film tersebut menjadi cult dan terus dikenang banyak orang hingga memberi inspirasi dan pedoman moral kehidupan. Kalau boleh ditilik nyaris film-film hit keluaran di atas dekade 2000'an menngebrak bukan karena f/x heboh yang menyilaukan mata tapi karena kekuatan skrip. Hitung berapa banyak film laris dengan spesial efek dan bandingkan dengan drama/komedi keluarga(Home Alone, Step Mom, Sleepless in Seattle). Saat itu terutama era akhir 80-awal 90'an dijamuri film-film berbobot yang tidak hanya berlalu begitu saja dari benak penontonnya, namun juga meninggalkan bekas mendalam di memori audiensnya. Sangat menggugah emosionil siapapun yang menontonnya. Wajar jika masa itu film blockbuster mampu menerobos panggung nominasi Oscar dalam kategori utama. Semenjak heboh The Matrix dan dwilogi Terminator, studio major mulai menyadari arti f/x yang menjadi disaster dengan minimnya naskah-naskah kuat dan pengarahan berkarakter dari sutradaranya. Efek CGI menjadi raja komersial sebuah film naskah dalam semalampun tak apa asal efeknya bombastis, penonton awampun umumnya suka sajian f/x plotless hingga tren blockbuster selalu mendominasi peta bisnis. Memuakkan bagi pencinta film sejati namun memuskan bagi produser film-film tsb. Sementara film-film kelas Oscar cenderung film kelewat berat yang membuat depresi penonton awam terutama anak remaja dan tidak komersil terkadang sangat segmented. Rasanya lama berlalu sejak duo Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon dan Gladiator menggebrak box offce dan Oscar (demikian pula dengan trilogi The Lord of the Rings) itupun karena film-film tersebut juga didukung f/x cantik selain naskah yang prima. Penantian sebuah film drama beralur kuat minim f/x dan layak dinikmati general audiens terasa masih sangat lama...

Battle of Fantasy Epic

Setelah trilogi The Lord of The Rings sukses menghajar penonton dunia tentang betapa hebatnya film epik fantasi jika digarap dengan serius , serbuan peri, kurcaci,dan mahluk dongeng lainnya terus bereksodus kelayar lebar, menyusul sesudahnya The Chronicles of Narnia : The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe yang berhasil menggeser perolehan franchise teranyar Mr.Potter dan Piala Api yang notabene memiliki lebih banyak pengikut dibanding legenda lemari ke negeri dongeng. Hollywood jadinya semakin tak ragu menyuntik dollar yang tak sedikit hingga mengiyakan berbagai proyek fantasi epik lainnya. Sebutlah selain franchise Harry Potter yang seri terbarunya rilis summer tahun depan(Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix), dan The Chronicles of Narnia : Prince Caspian yang edar 2008 ada Eragon yang siap dilempar ke bioskop akhir tahun ini serta besutan Guillermo Del Toro yang dititeli Pan's Labyrinth, Stardust dengan jualan Michelle Pfiffer serta dukungan banyak nama tenar(Merryl Streep, Claire Danes, Sienna Miller, Peter O'Toole, Rupert Everett, dan Robert DeNiro) , His Dark Material : Golden Compass yang menghadirkan Nicole Kidman dan Eva Green sebagai nyonya lalim dan ratu penyihir baik hati, Beowulf yang disutradarai Robert Zemeckis dalam format CGI yang semoga lebih nyata dari Polar Express (yang berisi manusia dengan ekspresi jadi-jadian) dangan bintang seksi Angelina Jolie, lalu adapula kisah Natalie Portman yang mewarisi toko ajaib dari Dustin Hoffman di Mr. Magorium 's Wonder Emporium, hingga yang baru memasuki tahap pematangan naskah seperti Inkheart untuk rilis 2007, sekuel lepas trilogi The Lord of The Rings- Ancanar yang masa post-productionnya sangat lama(tujuh tahun), Artemis Fowl, hingga versi dewasa dari Alice in The Wonderland yang menghadirkan Sarah Michelle Gellar. Peperangan film-film fantasi di atas diperkirakan akan mengorbankan beberapa judul yang bakalan terjatuh gagal meraih penonton untuk menambal bujetnya yang gila-gilaan dengan jualan f/x dashyat. Kisah fantasi pasca keberhasilan The Lord of The Rings dan franchise Harry Potter sendiri tidaklah semanis The Chronicles of Narnia ataupun Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Peter Pan dan Ella Enchanted gagal mendulang laba meski Peter Pan malah bisa disebut merugi kendati filmnya tidak buruk sama sekali. Intinya semoga Hollywood tidak hanya latah mengikuti trend sehingga membuat film dengan naskah asal-asalan dan tergiur laba besar genre ini belakangan.

Seolah menjadi garam dalam sayur, kehadiran gadis-gadis culas dapat memepermanis tampilan film remaja sekaligus mempertajam konflik yang ada, Nancy Allen sukses melakoninya ketika menjadi karakter keji tak tertahankan dalam Carrie (1976). Heathers bisa menjadi acuan betapa gadis remaja terkadang dapat berlaku lebih ganas dari teroris sekalipun, di sini gadis-gadis berhati iblis namun bersosok manis ini menghabisi teman-teman lemah mereka yang malang dan tak mampu melawan kebuasan mereka. Stereotip ini rupanya terus dipertahankan dalam banyak film remaja walaupun porsinya kecil dan tak lebih sebagai pelengkap konflik SMA, sebelum Mean Girls kembali memfokuskan plot pada geng populer yang jahat dan kejam. Masa SMA yang manis serasa berat memang jika dilihat lebih lanjut terutama bagi siswa-siswi kuper yang cerdas tapi berpenampilan buruk.
